What is an Encounter with God?

An encounter with God is a divine experience that results from a direct interaction with His person, presence, or power. It is not a fleeting moment but a life-changing event where the reality of who God is becomes undeniably clear. These encounters leave us changed, filling us with awe, clarity, and purpose.

Biblical Examples of Encounters

In the Garden of Eden, Adam experienced daily encounters with God, walking in His presence and hearing His voice in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8). This was a relationship of continuous fellowship—a deep, intimate communion with the Creator.

Contrast Adam’s experience with Saul of Tarsus, who encountered Jesus in a dramatic vision on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3-6). In a blinding flash of light, Saul was confronted by the unmistakable presence of Christ. That encounter transformed him into Paul, the apostle, redefining his purpose forever.

These examples illustrate the diversity of encounters with God: some are gentle and relational, like Adam’s, while others are sudden and transformative, like Saul’s. Yet all are initiated by God to reveal His nature and draw us closer to Him.

How to Prepare for Encounters with God

While God sovereignly initiates encounters, we can position ourselves to meet Him by engaging in key spiritual practices:

1. Encounter God in His Word God’s Word is a reflection of His face. Every time you immerse yourself in Scripture, you are beholding God’s presence through His living Word, Jesus. Let this perspective transform your Bible study into a profound meeting with God.
2. Encounter God in Prayer Prayer is a profound mystery, a divine system connecting humanity to God. Each time you enter into prayer, you activate a powerful spiritual dynamic, positioning yourself for a divine encounter.
3. Encounter God in Christian Fellowship God often uses the community of believers to reveal Himself, whether through church gatherings, small groups, or moments of impartation. Do not underestimate the transformative power of fellowship.

Step into these opportunities with faith this year. God longs to reveal Himself to you. Make space for His presence, expect Him to move, and watch as your life is transformed by fresh encounters with Him.

I specifically pray that the Lord will open the floodgates of heaven, granting you encounters that will permanently transform your life this year.
