Resist the devil and he will flee from you

James 4:7 gives a clear directive: resist the devil, and he will flee. This encourages believers to actively defend against spiritual attacks by submitting to God and resisting the enemy. But what does it mean to resist the devil, and how do we live this out daily?

The word resist means to actively oppose or set oneself against the devil. It’s a military term, meaning “to array in battle against.”

First, resisting implies active opposition. When Satan attacks, we must oppose what he is doing or trying to do in our lives.

Second, resist is a command to take a battle stance. As Paul writes:

“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13, KJV).

God commands us to array ourselves against the devil’s works.

Third, the command to resist follows “Submit yourselves therefore to God.” Submission to God is essential. We cannot effectively resist the devil without first aligning ourselves with God’s will, authority, and strength.

But how do we resist Satan in everyday life? We don’t expect a physical confrontation with the devil, but rather temptations to sin, discouragement, doubts, distractions, worldly desires, and attacks on our finances, health, or family. Understanding how the devil operates in our lives(his methods) is crucial. Consider the temptations faced by Jesus and Job.

So how do we resist the devil in practice? God instructs us to take our stance and put on His armor (Ephesians 6:10-18), which includes truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. Jesus modeled this by using Scripture to resist the devil (Matthew 4:1-11). Each temptation was countered with God’s truth. We resist in the same way—by knowing, believing, and speaking God’s Word.

Here’s God’s promise: if we resist Satan, he will flee. The word flee means to run away quickly, as if to escape. The devil retreats from believers who stand firm in God’s truth.

Resisting the devil isn’t a one-time act but an ongoing posture of faith. Peter warns:

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8, KJV).

The devil may be persistent, but if we continue to resist, he must flee, as promised in James 4:7.

So we resist the devil by submitting to God daily through prayer, worship, and surrendering to His will. We resist by standing on the truth of God’s Word, holding the shield of faith, wearing the helmet of salvation, and walking in the peace of the gospel. Armed with righteousness, faith, and truth, we can stand firm against the enemy’s attacks.

Meditate

Think about areas in your life where the enemy has tried to attack. How can you better resist his schemes? What Scriptures can you arm yourself with to stand firm?

Act on the Word

Submit to God today. Pray for His strength to resist the devil in whatever form temptation may come. Equip yourself by memorizing Bible verses that will help you stand firm when trials arise. Trust that God’s power is greater than any attack the enemy may bring.

Father, help me fully submit to You and resist the devil in every area of my life. Give me discernment, strength, and wisdom from Your Word to stand firm. In Jesus’ name, amen.
