Our works do not save us but they matter!
“Works” in the Christian context often lead to confusion. Some believers perceive their relationship with God strictly through their deeds, while others deemphasize the significance of works entirely. Both perspectives can pose challenges to our faith. This devotional delves into two key reasons why our works matter.
First, God created us in Christ to perform good works. Acknowledging this truth is crucial and should not be ignored. God’s principal intention for us in Christ is to partake in and reveal His glory. How do we achieve this? Not just by voicing our praise and worship but by manifesting God’s virtues and excellencies in our character, words, and actions. Essentially, our works become a vehicle through which God accomplishes His eternal purpose in Christ—our divine mandate to demonstrate His glory. The grace we’ve been given prompts us to do good works, a concept distinct from the futile attempts to earn God’s favor, known as the “dead works of the Law”.
Second, our actions significantly mold our Christian experience on earth. Whether we thrive or struggle spiritually is largely influenced by our actions. Here’s why: Faith, like grace, is demonstrated through works. Faith isn’t just an internal conviction; it’s made tangible through our actions inspired by what we truly believe. Our choices and subsequent actions carry substantial weight. The state of various aspects of our lives — our relationship with God, financial situation, interpersonal relationships, physical health, etc.—often reflects our choices and actions.
To summarize, the things we do or the actions we take carry great importance. We’ve explored two practical reasons why this is true. As believers, we’re called to be doers of God’s Word, bearing spiritual fruit.
