Have you ever imagined what it was like when Adam was created, or what happens when God speaks? Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dry bones provides a dramatic illustration.
The Lord showed Ezekiel a valley filled with dry bones, symbolizing the defeated army of Israel. The people were despondent, believing all hope was lost with their military destroyed and their warriors dead. Imagine the sight: a valley of very dry bones, representing utter hopelessness in Israel. This image can mirror the challenges we face in health, finances, family, ministry, and more.
What should you do when faced with such despair? What did God do when the earth was formless and empty in Genesis 1:2-3? What instruction did God give Ezekiel in his desolate situation? Verse 4 tells us,
“Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” (Ezekiel 37:4, KJV)
God commanded Ezekiel to speak to the bones—to prophesy, which meant declaring God’s message to them. Ezekiel obeyed, and as he spoke, he heard a noise and felt a quaking as the bones reassembled into human forms!
Ezekiel spoke, and life was restored where there was death. The Word of God is alive and life-giving. With God, no hope is truly dead. His Word can revive hope that was lost. As you declare God’s Word over daunting circumstances, expect a shift, a stirring in the spiritual realm.
Here’s something even more thrilling: the Holy Spirit that empowered Ezekiel dwells in you even more abundantly. The same command God gave to Ezekiel in the Old Testament is reiterated to us in the New Testament. You might wonder where and how? Here is the New Testament mandate to speak life,
“For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.” (Mark 11:23, KJV)
We are born a prophetic people. There is power in your words. This isn’t about speaking aimlessly but about activating your faith through the Spirit. Personally, I often do this after praying in tongues and stirring myself up in the Spirit, then I declare the scriptures over my life situations.
So, speak life to the dry bones of your life. Jesus said you should do it, so believe and act.

Consider how this vision parallels the creation story in Genesis 1:1-3. How does speaking to the bones compare to God speaking the world into existence?
Apply the Word
One of the boldest actions you can take as a Christian is to speak God’s words, often to things that seem lifeless. This may make some uncomfortable, but open your mouth and start speaking by the Spirit.
Pray
Ask the Lord to empower you to speak prophetically to the dry areas of your life.
