Thy kingdom come means to bring God’s kingdom on earth
Jesus taught us to pray for God’s kingdom, often declaring its imminent arrival. This devotional delves into Jesus’s interpretation of “kingdom” in this context and God’s intention to establish His reign on earth.
In the subsequent sentence, “Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven,” Jesus clarifies that God’s kingdom represents the domain where He, as King, sees His will realized. Two main domains exist in the created universe: heaven and earth. According to Matthew 6:10, God’s will reign supreme in heaven, implying its absence on earth. Recognizing this distinction is vital. We must acknowledge that our present earth, worldly systems, and prevalent human condition and behaviors do not mirror God’s intent. In the beginning, it was not so( Matthew 19:8).
So, what exactly is God’s will? What does He want on earth? God desires righteousness, peace, and joy in our lives, homes, communities, and nations(Romans 14:17). He does not want sin, disease, satanic oppressions, suffering, agony, or wickedness. If you doubt God’s intentions, look at Jesus’s life and actions. As the King of the Kingdom, Jesus embodied the culture of God’s kingdom on earth. His life and ministry exemplified what God wants to do on earth, as Isaiah prophesied:
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; Because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to them that are bound…To comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, To give unto them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness…” (Isaiah 61:1–3, KJV)
Jesus prophetically declared, “Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God.” (Hebrews 10:7, KJV). He came to do God’s will, to establish the kingdom.
