Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? (Jn. 18:38 KJV)
What is truth? Where do we find truth?
Pilate’s question to Jesus has fascinated theologians and philosophers for centuries. This question taps into humanity’s innate curiosity about truth. Why did Pilate ask Jesus this probing question? It stemmed from Jesus’ unconventional use of the term “truth,” which intrigued Pilate. In the preceding verse, Jesus stated:
“Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.” (John 18:37, KJV)
Jesus claimed to bear witness to the truth and declared that those who belong to the truth listen to Him. Pilate quickly grasped that Jesus’ concept of truth diverged from conventional understanding. Though Jesus didn’t explicitly answer Pilate’s question, His life and teachings provide insights.
What did Jesus mean by “truth?” Generally, the term refers to knowledge of reality—being aware of what is real and exists. For example, science offers us knowledge of the natural world, presenting scientific truths. Yet, there is also spiritual truth, an awareness of spiritual realities. The most crucial reality is God, the source of all existence.
However, Jesus’ use of the term “truth” veers away from its generic meaning. He equated truth with God the Father. One of His essential missions was to make the invisible God known to humanity. In this context, truth isn’t merely facts or data but is a person—God Himself. Scriptures also attribute the term “truth” to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus declared, “I am the Way, the truth, and the life,” and the Holy Spirit is also identified as Truth.
No human soul finds rest until it encounters the ultimate Truth—Jesus. As a believer, knowing this truth has set you free. Growing in your knowledge of this truth further expands your freedom in every aspect of life.
