Mary had a big heart for God
Conceiving, carrying a pregnancy for nine months, and giving birth to Jesus were not only physically demanding tasks but also spiritually profound for a teenage girl in ancient Israel. However, the real challenge for Mary was not the physical changes but the emotional and spiritual journey she embarked upon.
Mary stands as a remarkable example of unwavering faith. Despite not being from a priestly, kingly, or prophetic lineage, and considering herself “of low estate” (Luke 1:48), she exhibited a belief in God’s plan that surpassed even that of Zechariah, a priest. When the angel brought the good news, her response was one of complete submission: “be it unto me according to thy word”. This act of faith was so pleasing to God that it was highlighted prophetically when Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, began to prophesy (Luke 1:45).
Mary’s journey involved more than just believing the angel’s announcement. She had to nurture and carry God’s eternal purpose within her heart, a heart so expansive that it could embrace such a colossal divine plan without faltering. Unlike many who might succumb to doubt or fear, Mary remained steadfast. She understood Jesus’ supernatural conception unlike any other and maintained her faith even when His ministry faced skepticism and criticism. The scripture often highlights how she “treasured up things in her heart” (Luke 2:19), reflecting her deep contemplation and unwavering trust.
Her heart was more than an incubator; it was a sanctuary where God’s words and plans were nurtured, unimpeded by fear, worry, or anxiety.
Mary’s heart was a vessel the Lord could trust to believe in His plan and to sustain it amidst life’s storms.

Reflect on Luke 1:38. Consider Mary’s response to the angel’s message and what it reveals about her faith and character.
Apply the Word
Ask yourself: Can God trust my heart to embrace and nurture His plans for my life without succumbing to discouragement, fear, or anxiety? God desires His people to have hearts that are open and receptive to His calling – offer Him one that He can use.
Pray
Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in preparing your heart for God’s workings in your life. Pray for a heart that mirrors Mary’s – open, trusting, and strong in faith.
